Selecting a Child Care Provider

Working Mom
Selecting a Child Care Provider

Before you begin your search for child care, you should evaluate your needs, as well as those of your child. By analyzing and prioritizing your child care needs, you will have a clear idea of what it is your looking for. In doing so, you should consider the following tips on assessing your personal child care situation and needs:

  • Your Children-How old are they? If you have more than one, do you want them in the same program? Do they have special needs and/or requirements?

  • Developmental Level-What developmental level is your child at? What sort of environment would enhance his/her developmental level?

  • Priorities/Requirements-What is important to you in a care setting? What age grouping do you want your child in? Would you like a program based on educational and/or physical activities? What kind of discipline philosophy would you like the program to adhere to?

  • Budget-How much are you willing to spend on child care?

  • Schedule-When do you need care? How consistent or flexible is your schedule?

  • Transportation/Location-Based on the proximity to your home or office, how is your child going to get to and from child care?

  • Back-Up-Who is available in case of an emergency?

Once you have figured out these considerations, you can move forward in the process of selecting child care. With your priorities and needs in order, choosing your ideal child care program should be easier. For more information on the various types of child care available, please visit Types of Care.
