Money Matters :  Paying for College

Tips for Completing the FAFSA... Page 2

continued

  • Key point: You should consult each college's admissions materials for the proper deadline information. Do not rely on the deadlines provided as part of the PROFILE packet or on the filing requirements that are listed in the popular admissions and financial aid guidebooks sold in bookstores, as this information is oftentimes incorrect. You should also be aware that the information on some colleges' websites is frequently outdated. Be sure to check that the information refers to deadlines and requirements for the academic year you are seeking aid.

  • Send the FAFSA and PROFILE via Express Mail - Return Receipt Requested. You need to have proof of mailing and delivery, in case there are delays or computer glitches at the processor. Although each form goes to a P.O. Box in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, you need to send the FAFSA and PROFILE in separate Express Mail containers. Since the processor is in a remote location, it will take two days with Express Mail for your form to reach the processor. With Express Mail, you can track delivery via phone or the Internet.

  • A few weeks after you file the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). If you filed a PROFILE form, within a few weeks you will receive a Data Confirmation Report. Compare the information on the SAR and Data Confirmation Report with your photocopies of the FAFSA and PROFILE respectively to make sure that your data was correctly inputted by the processor and that the results are being sent to the proper schools and programs.

  • If required, revise any estimated figures after your tax returns are completed.

  • For students with divorced or separated parents: Only the financial information of the "custodial parent" should be listed on the FAFSA and PROFILE form.

  • For students with remarried parents: The stepparent's financial information is required on the FAFSA and the PROFILE form.
