Searching for that
perfect job... Page 2
continued
Once you've clarified some of the
basics, create a mental picture of your perfect day. Don't worry if at this point you
don't know exactly what your job would be. For now, it's enough to have a generalized
picture of how your new life might look and feel.
Maura saw herself waking up an hour later than usual, feeling rested and ready to start
the day. Since she is not yet clear on what her ideal work might be, she focused instead
on what it would be like to work independently, to travel and to take summers off. She
also considered the things that matter most to her, and then saw herself building these
elements into her everyday life.
For example, Maura pictured herself having the time--and energy--to pursue activities
which support her values: exercise, spending time with the people she loves, giving back
to the community, and engaging in quiet reflection and prayer. Maura completed her ideal
day by imagining herself drifting off to sleep feeling a sense of contentment and an
eagerness to begin a new day. Given her life vision, some career alternatives that strike
her as a fit are being a personal chef and teaching cooking classes from the fall through
the spring, and writing cookbooks from a cottage near the ocean in the summer.
Once you've created your vision, it's important to replay it often in order to help anchor
this new "reality" in your mind. Research has show that your vision will be most
powerfully imprinted in your subconscious if you focus on it during your brain's alpha
states -- when you awake in the morning or just before dropping off to sleep at night.
With your vision of a satisfying, purposeful work/life as your guidepost, you have a much
better chance of being guided to your own "right livelihood." And remember, you
won't see yourself doing it if you can't "see" yourself doing it!
