3. Health Care
Specifically, the number of women doctors is on the rise. These doctors tend to
concentrate in female-related areas of specialization: OB-GYN, fertility doctors and
counselors. Family practice and pharmacy are also common choices. More women are becoming
physical therapists, occupational therapists and rehabilitation counselors as well.
4. Law
Although the number of women entering the field as a whole is growing, more and more
elder, patent, copyright and corporate lawyers today are women.
5. Art/Design
There is a close correlation between the rise of artistic careers and the rise of computer
careers because so many things-such as stationery, advertisements and layouts to name a
few-are created today using highly-detailed computer design software. Graphic designers
and graphic artists fall under this category, as well as art dealers, animators,
filmmakers, architects, and landscape, interior and fashion designers.
6. Sales/Marketing
This category is a wide umbrella: Lobbyists, legislators, art dealers, real estate agents
and general saleswomen are forging into areas previously reserved for men.
7. Science/Technical
Women in this grouping are often found in the fields of marine biology, environmental
science, health technology, architecture, piloting, urban planning and engineering.
8. Human resources
This category is growing with more female temporary staffing specialists, management
consultants, labor relations executives and general human resources/employee assistance
managers.
9. Teaching
Always a popular career choice for women, this field is growing particularly in the
elementary and secondary levels, The special education branch is also growing as care
needs for special children are increasingly recognized.
10. Writing/Editing
Editors of various types-journalistic, film-fit here, as well as journalists, novelists
and technical writers.
Finally, we can't ignore the fact that non-traditional occupations (NTOs) are attracting
women, especially after government efforts in recent years to recruit and train them.
These jobs tend to be more physical (firefighters, military officers, construction
managers and pilots), but NTOs also encompass the clergy, financial planners and any
career that previously was not equated with, or altogether excluded, women.
In the 90s, it does not matter which career path women choose to follow: more traditional
"women's" careers, or jobs that are completely new and different . Find your
niche, and you will have options for satisfaction, growth and happiness.
