Ready...Set...Don't Go!... Page 2

continued

The next step is to make a list of all the baby things you will need to get started -- decide what is truly necessary and what is not. SET your priorities. Obviously, you'll need to purchase a crib and a car seat. With these items it is best to purchase new, rather than borrow, due to safety issues.

Do a lot of comparison shopping. You'll find the best deals at larger stores such as Target or Babies R Us rather than cute little boutiques. Have someone throw you a baby shower (or two), and be sure to register for the things that you really need! Your baby won't suffer any harm or love you any less if you don't get that baby wipe warmer.

So, you've set your priorities for all the things that you'll need to get started, but what about after the baby is born? Now you'll need to add to your budget all the new monthly expenses that come with a baby. These include diapers, formula (breast milk is free!), healthcare, childcare, clothes, photo/videos, and toys.

Again, you may have to shift some figures around and prioritize in order to get you or keep you in the black.

Don't Go!

This step is pretty straightforward but sometimes difficult to follow… DON'T GO outside of your budget!

Or… DON'T GO baby-crazy!

It's easy to do. Your little bundle of joy arrives. You're feeling elated, overjoyed, and thrilled. You want to give your child everything! Just remember, the greatest developmental toy you can give your infant is your face, voice and arms.
